Water softeners<\/strong> have experienced substantial diffusion in homes throughout Italy, especially in recent years.<\/p>

This phenomenon is related to consumers’ growing awareness of the effects of limescale<\/strong> on household appliances, plumbing, and, not least, on the quality of daily life: hard water, in fact, is a common problem in many regions.<\/p>

How do water softeners work?<\/strong><\/h3>

Softened<\/strong> water is a type of treated water that removes calcium and magnesium minerals that cause scaling<\/strong> in our appliances and pipes.<\/p>

The transformation from “hard<\/strong>” water to “softened<\/strong>” water occurs through an exchange of sodium ions, fixed on the resins, and calcium and magnesium ions contained in the water: the resins capture calcium and magnesium salts and release sodium ions. This process does not remove other minerals essential to human health. <\/p>

To restore the resins to new efficiency and ensure effectiveness, simply regenerate it periodically with sodium chloride<\/strong>: this fully automatic operation is called regeneration and involves running brine through the resins.<\/p>

But so is drinking softened water safe for health?<\/strong><\/h3>

First of all, it is good to remember that water quality in Italy is regulated by Legislative Decree 18\/2023<\/strong>, which sets strict standards for water for human consumption and ensures thatsoftened water meets all safety and quality requirements.<\/strong><\/p>

The softener keeps<\/strong> the sodium content in the softened water within safe limits and ensures that it does not exceed 200 mg per liter<\/strong> (maximum limit set by regulations), a level considered safe for daily consumption.<\/p>

For those on hyposodium diets, however, it is advisable to consult a physician or experienced nutritionist to evaluate possible alternatives<\/strong> and obtain advice tailored to specific needs.<\/p>

Benefits of softened water<\/strong><\/h2>

In addition to safety, softened water also offers several health benefits. For example, it can contribute to softer skin<\/strong> and better hydration<\/strong>. <\/p>

Finally, the water softener removes only calcium and magnesium while leaving all other minerals present unaffected, thus contributing to our daily intake of essential nutrients that are vital to our overall health and well-being.<\/p>
